The story of SAK Ethiopia begins with one man’s journey — from hardship and survival on the streets to a life of hope, purpose, and service.
Born in the historic town of Lalibela and having lived through the hardship of street life in Addis Ababa, Tilahun Getnet transformed his darkest chapters into a mission of hope. With strength, faith and the kindness of a stranger, he turned his journey into the heartbeat of Simple Act of Kindness Ethiopia: guiding vulnerable children from survival to purpose and inviting every visitor to join in the ripple of change.
Born and raised in Lalibela, a small historic town in northern Ethiopia, renowned for its ancient rock-hewn churches. Life in Lalibela was simple but filled with hardship. His mother, a single parent, worked tirelessly to provide for her children. Every day, she walked barefoot for 8 to 9 hours into the forest to collect heavy bundles of firewood, carrying them on her back to sell for less than two dollars. Despite her sacrifices, she could not afford to send her children to school or provide enough food. Witnessing her struggles broke Tilahun’s heart, and as a young boy, he made the painful decision to leave home in search of survival.
At a young age, Tilahun made the painful decision to leave home, arriving in Addis Ababa with no family, shelter, or support. Like many others, he endured hunger, fear, and the dangers of street life — a reality no child should face.
Tilahun’s life turned when he met Shelley, a compassionate Canadian woman who believed in him when hope seemed lost. With her support, he returned to school, finished high school, and discovered the power of kindness to transform lives.
Determined to create a better future, Tilahun graduated from Tourism College and founded his own company, Grace Ethio Tour. His career as a tour guide and interpreter opened doors — but his heart remained with children facing struggles like his own.
Guided by faith and inspired by Matthew 5:16, Tilahun founded Simple Acts of Kindness Ethiopia. What began as a vision grew into a nonprofit dedicated to giving vulnerable children the same hope and opportunity that once saved his life.
Today, Tilahun is a husband and proud father of two. As Executive Director of SAK Ethiopia, he leads with gratitude, passion, and a deep commitment to walk with children and families so they too can heal, grow, and shine.
Just as one act of kindness changed his life, Tilahun is committed to changing the lives of others. His story reminds us that when kindness shines, it creates ripples of hope that can transform the world.
“Let your light so shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
